O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high-school student. She was able to advance to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for the performance. Her performance was highly applauded by the jury. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for top 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were stunned by the results and advised the viewers to vote for contestants like Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after numerous outstanding performances. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil advanced into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
